On Monday, April 21st, ShopRite of Canton store owners Chuck Joseph, Sr. and his son Chuck Joseph, Jr., presented Avon Land Trust President Christine Graesser with a check in the amount of $2,500.00. The Josephs concluded a successful reusable bag rebate program and reallocated the funds to three local environmental organizations; The Canton Land Trust and the Elizabeth Park Conservancy were the other two recipients. Joseph Family Markets, which owns the Shop Rite stores in Canton and West Hartford, is a local owner-operated business that invests in the communities it serves. Explains the senior Joseph: “Most of our charitable giving is oriented toward nutrition and education, so the work the Avon Land Trust is doing to get children outdoors is a natural fit.”
The Avon Land Trust plans to invest ShopRite’s generous donation toward signs and information kiosks on its Oakes Preserve and Talcott Mountain trails to encourage greater use of Avon’s open space by residents, especially children. The Land Trust hopes to use the Oakes as an outdoor classroom in cooperation with local schools.
