Trail History:
Hazen Park is on land donated by Marjorie Hazen in 1963 in memory of her husband Maynard Hazen, one of two bankers who established the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving in 1925. The extension of the Hazen Trail, from Hazen Park up to the Metacomet Ridge was completed by Avon Land Trust volunteers in the 1990s. The trail ascends the western slopes of Talcott Mountain, though switchbacks lessen the gradient. Today, the Hazen Trail offers a moderate to strenuous hike through diverse terrains, including woodlands and ridgelines, leading to scenic overlooks and the Heublein Tower. The Heublein Tower is the fourth one to grace the ridgeline. The first two were constructed by Daniel Wadsworth who founded the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford and the third was built by Avon’s own Matthew “Henry” Barlett. Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) and Reverend Joseph Twichell of the Asylum Hill Congregational Church often hiked together to the Bartlett tower in the 1870s.
Wildlife overview:
Visitors may spot white-tailed deer, red foxes, and eastern cottontail rabbits, along with birds like robins, cardinals, and red-tailed hawks making the trail a vibrant spot for nature observation.
