The Avon Land Trust is pleased to report that it has recently received a generous grant of $2,000 from the Whole Foods Market’s Community Giving Program! The funds will be used to further our mission of preserving open space, providing trails and hikes for public enjoyment, offering educational programming on environmental topics, and improving wildlife habitat.
The Avon Land Trust has recently re-activated its Acquisition Committee, to identify properties of interest, prioritize them, and approach the landowners about possible donation or purchase. Bill Shea will lead the committee. The land trust has acquired three properties in the past three years, and hopes to acquire more!
The Avon Land Trust is proud to announce it has received a very generous grant of $20,525 from the Richard P. Garmany Fund. The grant will be used to make major improvements to three of our properties. Richard P. Garmany was an avid skier, tennis player, boater, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. He had a long, distinguished career at Aetna, where he was beloved by his many colleagues. Richard P. Garmany was also a resident of Avon.
It’s now OFFICIAL! The Avon Land Trust is receiving a grant for $4,000 from Avon Greater Together (AGT). AGT is like a subsidiary or satellite of the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, but Hartford Foundation created town-specific boards that are closely attuned to the unique needs of each town. They have conducted two surveys in recent years, and have their ears to the ground, and run a tight ship. We are all on the side of angels — on the same team, pulling together to make the Avon community a better place to live for our children and grandchildren. THANKS AVON GREATER TOGETHER!
The Avon Land Trust partnered with the Avon Free Public Library to host a Birds of Prey presentation by Horizon Wings, a bird rehabilitation Center located in Ashford CT. Over 165 people attended – a new record for an ALT event! Attendees got to learn all about raptors, owls and eagles.
The Avon Land Trust was very pleased to get some good news today! The Connecticut Water Company awarded us a grant for $500, to improve our trails at Oakes Preserve, an important Avon watershed area. Of all the different utility companies out there here in CT, you have to love Connecticut Water for the way they give back to the community!

The Avon Land Trust would like to thank everyone who supported us by attending our Puerto Vallarta fundraiser on 1/5/23. This was our second fundraiser and it was very successful in raising needed funds for our mission of preserving open space, providing hiking trails for public enjoyment, improving wildlife habitat, and providing environmental educational programming. Muchas Gracias!
We had absolutely halcyon weather and brilliant foliage for our Talk and Walk at Oakes Preserve. About 22 people were in attendance for a talk on the history of the parcel by our historian Janet Conner. Noted Avon historian Nora Howard talked about her family’s history there, and how the parcel was acquired by the land trust. Co-presidents Bob Breckinridge and Rick Dubiel then talked about the history and role of the land trust, what we have done to the property to improve it for both wildlife and public enjoyment, and what our future plans are. Special thanks to trail master Scott Lewis for his hard work to make significant improvement to the hillside trail in time for the event. The event concluded with a hike around the former ice pond known as Lake Erie.
